Abstract

Background: Postpartum mothers who live in dual roles as mothers and workers face the demands of physical, psychological, and social adaptation, as well as job responsibilities after childbirth. These conditions can increase the risk of stress, anxiety, emotional exhaustion, and mental health disorders if not supported by adequate adaptability and social support. Objectives: This study aims to determine the relationship between dual roles as mothers and workers on maternal mental health after childbirth at Sundari General Hospital, Medan. Methods: This study uses a quantitative method with a descriptive correlational design and a cross-sectional approach. The study population comprised 132 postpartum mothers, of whom 57 were selected based on the study criteria. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the Spearman Rank test. Results: The results showed that respondents with dual roles in the high category were 30 people (52.6%), while respondents with mental health disorders were in the high category as many as 37 people (64.9%). The results of the statistical test showed a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05) with a correlation coefficient of 0.919. These findings suggest a significant and very strong relationship between dual maternal and worker roles and maternal postpartum mental health. Conclusions: This study concluded that the higher the demands of dual roles, the higher the risk of mental health disorders in postpartum mothers.
