STRATEGIC GERIATRIC NURSING CARE FOR OLDER ADULTS WITH DEMENTIA AT UPTD BINJAI

ABSTRACT
Dementia is a progressive cognitive disorder commonly experienced by the elderly and has a significant impact on their quality of life. This case study aims to implement geriatric nursing care management using a service excellence approach for Mrs. P, an elderly woman with dementia residing at the UPTD Social Service for the Elderly in Binjai, North Sumatra Province. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques including interviews, observations, and physical examinations. The assessment results showed that Mrs. P experienced moderate cognitive impairment based on MMSE and SPMSQ evaluations, accompanied by symptoms such as memory disturbances, verbal communication problems, and ineffective coping. The nursing interventions provided included cognitive stimulation and emotional regulation, involving the family and creating a safe and comfortable environment. Evaluation showed improvements in the patient’s cognitive and emotional functions. The results of this study highlight the importance of a patient-centered approach in providing quality geriatric nursing care for elderly individuals with dementia.
